Making the Most of Your Image: Colour and Statistics

چکیده
There have been a number of interesting and exciting developments in computer vision research over the past decade. In this paper we briefly review some of those in which the contribution of British research groups has been prominent. Examples include model based vision, the application of invariance theory, active vision, and the application of statistical techniques to the modelling and interpretation of images of objects whose shape and appearance can vary from instance to instance. The main focus of the paper is on reviewing some recent developments in the application of statistical techniques, both at the pixel and object levels. The former is illustrated by examples from our own work on the modelling of colour images, whilst the latter is mainly concerned with the modelling of the shape and appearance of objects using principal components analysis as pioneered by the group at the University of Manchester in their Point Distribution and Active Shape Models. It is emphasised throughout how the use of such modelling techniques is dependent on the identification of problems for which there is a well defined ensemble of possible images leading to well defined distributions and manageable statistics. The importance of using up to date tools, programming methods and computing environments is illustrated in passing.

Molasses are produced in large amounts by sugar cane and sugar beet factories every year. However, they are considered as the waste product of the crystallization plants. Thus, although they contain significant amounts of materials with deep black colour which can be separated as food colour, molasses are very cheap and feasible to be used for this purpose. Aliquots of diluted molasses, after a...
متن کاملOptimal Schemes for Motion Estimation on Colour Image Sequences
This paper describes a method for incorporating the chrominance information when estimating motion in a colour image sequence. It is based on a Maximum Likelihood formulation of the motion estimation problem which assumes homogeneous additive Gaussian noise in each colour component, with known interf i e l d correlation statistics. The formulation is applied t o the complex-wavelet-domain match...

This paper describes a method for incorporating the chromin-ance information when estimating motion in a colour image sequence. It is based on a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) formulation of the motion estimation problem which assumes homogeneous additive Gaussian noise in each colour component, with known inter-eld correlation statistics. It deenes a noise-decorrelating colour space transform which p...

متن کاملCircular Statistics Applied to Colour Images
Three methods for summarising the characteristics of colour images are presented. They all rely on the ability to represent colours in terms of a 3D-polar coordinate system having independent brightness and saturation coordinates. The methods discussed are: hue statistics and saturation-weighted hue statistics, saturation-weighted hue histograms, and colour statistics histograms. The latter are...
